the universal canvas

horizon

Prior to 2020 I avoided capturing photos of the horizon at the beach unless there was a boat or something distinctive in the frame to make it unique. My perspective changed as I realised the interconnectedness of this simple scene -The Universal Canvas

Captive Horizon-2020

Captive Horizon was created in 2020 of the many covid 19 Lockdowns

………….”Melbourne’s restrictions eased to 25km radius on 19th October I investigated our 25km……..
I was inspired to create a photographic response to this new law and decided to photograph the water at the beaches on the Mornington Peninsula within my 25km radius”
……

..” I was fascinated that the vast expanse of water was untouchable unless by boat or swimming and it was illegal for me to explore. The shoreline had become a border to contain us”.

Universal Canvas- 2023- safety beach to portsea

This is a short excert of the experimental Film- Universal Canvas

Picturesque sights of the vast ocean and skies are indeed a global spectacle. The horizon plays the role of a universal canvas, connecting the world together in one shared experience. Acting as the unifying thread, the horizon seamlessly merges these vast landscapes into one collective experience. The experimental video , aptly named Universal Canvas, loops around the eloquent scenes of the extraordinary beaches lining Australia’s Mornington Peninsula – from Mount Martha to Portsea. What were once deserted beaches of yesteryears have evolved into the mesmerizing shores we witness today. Each frame is a work of art – a journey, captured, transformed and intricately digitally painted by hand looping these exquisite coastal locations together with the Horizon as the universal canvas

In June 2023 while on holiday in Bali I created this augmented reality filter to overlay over the horizons of different locations in Bali particularly the island Nusa Penida .

tasmania, australia

At the time of making the video in Bali the encaustic print of the image was being exhibited across the otherside of the world in a group exhibition – Gather Together in Tasmania organised by Fort Heart.

The printed image also activates a augmented reality filter of a video with a poem

scan QR code with phone to use filter.
